Spence is also a distinguished visiting Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher. He served as dean of the Stanford Business School from 1990 to 1999. Dr. Spence was awarded the John Kenneth Galbraith Prize for excellence in teaching and the John Bates Clark medal for a “significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.” In 2001, Dr. Spence received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. From 2006 to 2010, Dr. Spence served as chairman of the Commission on Growth and Development. Dr. Spence earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Princeton summa cum laude and was selected for a Rhodes Scholarship. He was awarded a BSMA from Oxford University and earned his doctorate degree in economics at Harvard University.
